Intro to Spoon Carving: Cooking Spoons July 21st 6PM
Enter the world of green woodworking through one of the most popular projects: a wooden spoon! During this 3 hour evening workshop, students will learn how to safely use a carving knife to make their very own cooking spoon.
We will be working with a pre-roughed out “spoon blank” made out of a beginner-friendly wood. Blanks will be pre-split and rough carved so students simply need to carve with a knife (carving with axes is level two). Students will learn far too much information about spoon carving in a beginner-friendly atmosphere. We will take plenty of breaks for snacks, stretching, and nerdy deep dives. There will be a handout to follow along with or take home to reference later, but students are welcome and encouraged to bring a notebook to take their own notes too!
Topics include, but are not limited to:
What is Green Woodworking? (I’ll tell you that part now: it’s any process that works with fresh, uncured wood, known as green wood. Green wood tends to be easier to work with hand tools, so it often overlaps with unplugged woodworking and carving).
Good Species for Carving
How to Source and Process Wood
Knife Safety
Basic Knife Techniques
Hook Knife Techniques
Drying Times and Avoiding Cracks

Materials fee is included in the cost and helps pay for tool maintenance and preparing spoon blanks. Students will have the opportunity to buy tools and extra blanks after class if they want to continue with carving.
